Coalition for a Safe & Healthy Connecticut
The Coalition for a Safe & Healthy Connecticut is a coalition of organizations and individuals united in campaigns to protect the health of children, workers and communities by reducing toxic hazards. Together we work to reduce toxic chemicals that contribute to illness, disability, birth defects and infertility, and environmental harm. Our goal is to replace hazardous toxic substances with safer alternatives.
Organizational membership is the basis of our democratic decision-making structure. There is no fee for joining, and no obligation to devote staff or resources. We are a citizen movement, united and motivated by our commitment to helping reduce toxins that damage health and child development, degrade water, air and land, and reduce environmental sustainability.
To join, an organization votes in favor of the following:
1. Agree with coalition goals, values and principles as described in the Coalition brochure. Your organization’s decision-making body should review the goals and values of the coalition, and decide if you basically agree with our key policy principles. You may also want to review the specific campaigns the Coalition is organizing.
2. Show public support for coalition goals by appearing on a list of coalition members that will be shown to policy makers, the media, etc.
3. Periodically ask your members to act. Ask your leaders and members to participate in occasional phone, email and mail campaigns, public events, visits or other events/activities organized by the coalition to influence decision-makers.
Together our organizations can mobilize a significant number of people to participate in citizen action. By coordinating constituent/citizen mobilization and media coverage we can convince decision-makers to take action to protect our health.
4. Vote on major coalition issues and Steering Committee members. Member organizations elect a Steering Committee that makes all major coalition decisions on policy and implementation. All major, new campaigns are sent to organizational members for comment before the Steering Committee makes decisions. Any member organization can nominate itself, or be nominated, to send a representative to serve on the Governing Board. All Steering Committee meetings are open to organizational members.
Individuals are also critical to the strength of the coalition, and are invited to join the Safe & Healthy Connecticut Network. The coalition sends members periodic information updates and action alerts via email to individuals who want to be notified when it is time to write or call decision-makers to urge them to act.
