Finally\, it looks like we’re turning the corner. If things change\, we will notify you\, but at this time we are planning to resume in person events starting with our 2022 ConnectiCOSH Annual Awards Night Dinner. This year’s dinner will be held on May 20\, 2022\, at the VFW Hall\, 152 Masserio Drive\, Berlin\, CT\, at 6:00. We have opted to reserve both the outdoor pavilion and the indoor hall to give us options in the event of renewed restrictions. \nThis year ConnectiCOSH will honor three individuals and one organization who have advocated for workers and fought hard for safer workplaces and justice on the job. \nConnectiCOSH will honor William (Bill) Louis as the recipient of the Ed Eagan award. Bill Louis is the President of the MDA-UAW\, Local 571. He is being recognized for his many years of service as a union representative and as the voice of his union brothers and sisters. Under Bill’s guidance the MDA Health and Safety Committee has taken on a greater role and increased responsibility in improving safety conditions for their members. \nAttorney Nathan Shafner will receive the Irving J. Selikoff-Matthew Shafner award. Nathan Shafner has passionately represented injured workers in securing the compensation and medical treatment that they are entitled to under the Workers’ Compensation Act since 1989. He has drafted language for and supported numerous workers’ compensation related bills and proposals that he believed would improve the workers’ compensation claims process for injured workers. Like his father Attorney Matthew Shafner\, Nathan always has the best interest of injured workers at heart. He is presently a partner at Embry\, Neusner\, Arscott & Shafner. \nThis year we are presenting Kenneth Tucker with an Exemplary Career Award. Ken has been the Director of Connecticut OSHA for the past 10 years and has worked for the agency for over 35 years. He is retiring this year. Before joining the CONN-OSHA administration Ken was a union steward and a health compliance officer in the public sector. He has devoted his career to the protection of working people in our state. \nWe are honored to present the Naugatuck Valley Project with the Marcia Trapé Memorial Award. Since 1983\, NVP has worked with unions and community organizations to improve the living conditions and benefits of members of their surrounding community. In many cases\, NVP has provided services without being funded for their work. ConnectiCOSH has been proud to work with Kim McLaughlin and Karime Pimentel of NVP on pandemic related issues over the last two years and to support their ongoing endeavors in their community. \nSome of the projects ConnectiCOSH is working on this year include: \n Participated and presented in various Worker Memorial Day events as a member of the CT AFL-CIO Health and Safety Committee \n Reduce toxic exposures in workplaces and consumer products as a member of the Coalition for a Safe and Healthy Connecticut \n Support and guide injured workers as part of the Injured Workers Project funded by Embry\, Neusner\, Arscott & Shafner \n Partner with NVP to create a multi-pronged community-based recovery center to specifically assist low-income residents\, working families and people of color in Connecticut’s Naugatuck Valley Region \n Help to educate employers\, young workers\, their families and mentors about young worker safety and employer requirements for employing young workers as part of the Young Worker Health & Safety Team \n Leadership trainings in partnership with the SEIU 1199 and National COSH \n Safety trainings in partnership with the New England Consortium \n Training on many other Health and Safety Topics \nMany local unions and businesses get involved in sponsoring this important labor event by purchasing an ad in our ad book.
